A video capturing a dog’s raw, unfiltered grief has gone viral once again, resurfacing a story that left the internet in tears when it first emerged last fall — the story of Oyo, a dog whose bond with his late owner appeared to defy even death itself.
According to the dog owner’s niece, who shared the story with Newsweek and asked to remain anonymous, her uncle and Oyo were inseparable for years. “He was like his shadow, following him wherever he went,” she said. But that bond was tested when her uncle became seriously ill and was in and out of the hospital in his final months.
Even before he passed away, the family says Oyo seemed to sense something was wrong. “Neighbors would tell us that they would often see him waiting outside or hear him wailing as if longing for my uncle’s return,” his niece recalled.
When her uncle ultimately passed, the family brought his body home for a traditional wake — and it was there that Oyo’s grief became impossible to ignore. In a video posted to TikTok under the account @princeandprincess_13 on September 23, Oyo is seen sitting beside his owner’s casket, breathing heavily, visibly overcome.
“When my uncle’s body was brought home for the wake, Oyo appeared completely lost,” his niece said. “He refused to eat, stayed beneath the coffin whenever he could, and often looked as though he was weeping or struggling to breathe.”
The family did everything they could to comfort him, offering food, water, and attention in the days that followed. But the grief didn’t ease. The day after the wake — the day after Oyo’s very public, very raw display of mourning — the dog passed away as well.
“Some may call it illness, others heartbreak, and truthfully, I cannot say for certain,” his niece said, reflecting on what took Oyo so suddenly. “What I do know is that their bond was real and deep, one that few could fully understand unless they witnessed it themselves.”
The story struck a chord with viewers far beyond the family’s own circle, tapping into a phenomenon many pet owners believe in but rarely see documented so plainly — animals who seem to grieve not just emotionally, but physically, sometimes fatally, in the wake of losing someone they love.
While there’s no way to medically confirm exactly what caused Oyo’s death so soon after his owner’s, the family has chosen to hold onto their own understanding of it: that Oyo’s heart, in the truest sense, simply couldn’t carry the loss.
Their bond, as his niece put it, was one of “love, loyalty and anguish without blemish” — a devotion that, in the end, may have asked more of Oyo than his small body could bear.
