Tucker Budzyn, the golden retriever who charmed more than 27 million followers across social media, has died at age 8 — but new details about his final weeks are showing just how much love surrounded him until the very end.
His owner, Courtney Budzyn, shared the news in an emotional Instagram video on September 6, revealing that Tucker passed away on September 2, just days after she went public with his lymphoma diagnosis. In truth, she had been quietly carrying the news for nearly two weeks before sharing it with his millions of fans.
According to Courtney, Tucker initially responded well to chemotherapy and appeared to be heading toward remission. But the treatment left a small hole in his intestine where the tumor had been — and overnight, that opening led to a sudden, severe infection. By the time she rushed him to the vet the next morning, his condition was already critical. Despite antibiotics and fluids, his temperature kept climbing, and the infection couldn’t be stopped.
What’s struck fans most, though, is how Courtney chose to spend Tucker’s final three weeks. Rather than retreating into grief after the diagnosis, she filled his days with everything he loved — swimming, rollerblading, wrestling with his brother Todd in the backyard, and his favorite treat, chicken, morning and night. She even took him for one last rollerblading outing, something she described as one of the most meaningful moments of her life.
“He was literally part of me,” Courtney said through tears, holding what appeared to be a small box containing his ashes. “It feels like I lost a body part.”
She also addressed the massive online community that grew alongside Tucker since his adoption in 2018, acknowledging that his loss is being felt far beyond her own household. “I know he was yours, too,” she told his followers, many of whom had followed his playful antics — and his signature expressive face — for years.
Despite the devastating loss, Courtney says she’s holding onto the belief that Tucker’s life was full, not just long. “I don’t know how to live, but I have to,” she said. “He didn’t lie by my side for all those years just for me to give up.”
