For a man from the Philippines known online as Jego Macs, that heartbreak came in an especially devastating way. His beloved dog, Moana, reportedly gave her life protecting him from a cobra—and one of her final moments would become an image he could never forget.

Moana, a small Shih Tzu–Chihuahua mix, had been resting near the steps of the family’s home while Jego was watching television. Suddenly, she began barking repeatedly.

At first, Jego thought little of it. He assumed Moana had simply noticed something outside or was playing. But after a while, the barking stopped, replaced by the sounds of a struggle.

Jego rushed outside to see what was happening.

Moana was confronting a cobra. Despite being much smaller than the snake, she had refused to retreat. She fought the dangerous intruder before Jego intervened and dealt with the snake.
