The voice outside the door made Gabriel stop breathing.
“Boss…”
Daniel Shaw.
The man who had stood beside him for twelve years.
The man who had helped build his empire.
The man who found every piece of evidence against Clara.
The man who convinced Gabriel that the woman he loved had destroyed him.
And now…
he was standing outside her apartment.
Gabriel slowly looked at me.
For the first time since he entered…
I saw something different in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Fear.
Because somewhere deep inside…
he already knew.
—
Three knocks.
A pause.
Then another knock.
The signal.
Only trusted members of Gabriel’s organization knew it.
Daniel was supposed to be one of them.
Gabriel picked up his gun from the floor.
But he didn’t point it at me.
He moved between me and the door.
Protecting me.
The irony almost made me laugh.
Eight months ago, he came looking for me as an enemy.
Now he was standing in front of me like a shield.
“Stay behind me.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because if Daniel is here…”
He looked toward the door.
“…then everything I believed might be wrong.”
—
The door opened.
Daniel stood there.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost smiling.
“Boss.”
His eyes moved past Gabriel.
And landed on me.
Then his expression changed.
Not surprise.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
Like he was seeing a mistake that needed to be corrected.
“You found her.”
Gabriel’s grip tightened.
“What are you doing here?”
Daniel looked around the apartment.
“Making sure the problem is solved.”
The words made my stomach turn.
Gabriel noticed.
“Problem?”
Daniel sighed.
“Clara always was good at making people feel sorry for her.”
The room went cold.
Gabriel stared at him.
“What did you say?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You really think she’s innocent?”
I watched Gabriel carefully.
Because this was the moment.
The moment everything would finally be decided.
—
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I can show you everything.”
He held up the screen.
Photos.
Messages.
Bank transfers.
The same evidence Gabriel had seen eight months earlier.
The evidence that destroyed us.
Gabriel looked at it.
Then at me.
For a second…
I saw the old pain return.
The doubt.
The betrayal.
But then something changed.
Because Gabriel had finally noticed something.
A detail everyone missed.
The dates.
—
“Wait.”
Daniel stopped.
Gabriel took the phone.
“These messages…”
He looked closer.
“They were sent after Clara disappeared.”
Silence.
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But Gabriel noticed.
“You told me she sent these.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Gabriel’s voice became colder.
“She couldn’t send anything after she was already gone.”
The room froze.
Because the first crack had appeared.
The perfect lie finally had a weakness.
—
Daniel slowly smiled.
“You’re emotional.”
“No.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“I’m thinking.”
That was the most dangerous thing Gabriel Russo could do.
Think.
Because anger could be manipulated.
Pain could be controlled.
But logic?
Logic was impossible to intimidate.
—
Gabriel turned toward me.
“Tell me everything.”
I looked at him.
“You’ll believe me?”
His expression softened for one second.
“I should have believed you eight months ago.”
The words hurt.
Because they were exactly what I needed to hear.
But they came too late.
I touched my stomach.
“The night the warehouse was attacked…”
I took a breath.
“I found out Daniel was moving information.”
Gabriel’s face changed.
“What?”
“He wasn’t protecting your organization.”
“He was selling pieces of it.”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
I continued.
“I found financial records connecting him to Connor Bell.”
Gabriel looked toward Daniel.
“You said Connor framed Clara.”
Daniel said nothing.
“Because you were working with him.”
—
The silence after that was unbearable.
Then Daniel laughed.
Not nervously.
Not fearfully.
Actually laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
Gabriel stared.
“Understand what?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Clara wasn’t supposed to survive.”
My blood turned cold.
Gabriel stepped forward.
“What did you say?”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“The warehouse attack was never about money.”
“It was about removing everyone who knew too much.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
Because he finally understood.
The attack wasn’t meant to destroy his empire.
It was meant to erase the evidence.
—
I touched my scar.
“The night I found the files, Daniel came after me.”
Gabriel looked at the wound again.
His face filled with guilt.
“I thought…”
His voice broke.
“I thought someone else did this.”
I looked at him.
“You sent your men after me.”
He closed his eyes.
Because it was true.
“I thought you betrayed me.”
“And I almost died because you believed the wrong person.”
The pain in his face was worse than anger.
Because Gabriel Russo could fight enemies.
But he couldn’t fight his own mistake.
—
Suddenly…
a sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
More than one person.
Daniel smiled.
“You took too long.”
Gabriel immediately understood.
“You didn’t come alone.”
The door behind Daniel opened.
Two armed men appeared.
But before they could move…
Gabriel reacted.
The next few seconds happened too fast.
A fight.
Shouting.
Broken furniture.
Daniel escaping through the window.
When the room finally became quiet…
Gabriel stood there breathing heavily.
But his eyes were only on one thing.
Me.
And the baby.
—
Later that night, Gabriel took me to a private medical clinic.
Not because he doubted me.
Because he was terrified.
Terrified that after everything…
he could lose us.
The doctor examined the scar.
Then looked at Gabriel.
“This wasn’t a normal injury.”
Gabriel’s face darkened.
“What do you mean?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Someone attempted a procedure without proper medical care.”
My stomach tightened.
“Someone tried to take the baby.”
Gabriel went completely still.
“What?”
The doctor looked at the files.
“Your child was the reason they kept her alive.”
The room became silent.
Someone didn’t just want Clara gone.
Someone wanted her baby.
—
On the way back, Gabriel said almost nothing.
Until we reached the apartment.
Then he finally spoke.
“Clara.”
I looked at him.
“I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
He swallowed.
“Is the baby mine?”
The question hurt.
Even after everything.
I stared at him.
“You really don’t know?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“I need to hear it.”
I placed my hand over my stomach.
“Yes.”
A long silence.
Then Gabriel closed his eyes.
For the first time in eight months…
the strongest man in Chicago looked broken.
“My child.”
The words were barely audible.
“My family.”
—
But before either of us could say more…
Gabriel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice came through.
A woman’s voice.
A voice I recognized.
Gabriel looked at me.
“Who is this?”
The woman laughed softly.
“Ask Clara.”
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
The woman continued:
“Ask her why she never told you the baby wasn’t the only thing they took from her.”
Gabriel looked at me.
“What is she talking about?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because the truth I had hidden for eight months…
was the one secret I was most afraid to reveal.
The woman on the phone whispered:
“Gabriel…”
“Your first child is still alive.”
The call ended.
And Gabriel realized the betrayal was bigger than either of us imagined.
